Dr. George Pegios – Australian Institute of Implant Dentistry – Cosmetic Procedures

The field of cosmetic dentistry encompasses a wide range of dental procedures designed to enhance the health and beauty of your smile. Using a variety of treatments, Dr. George Pegios of the Australian Institute of Implant Dentistry can correct everything from minor chips and stains to more severe problems such as cracked, misaligned, or unevenly spaced teeth. Although cosmetic dentistry undoubtedly creates a more beautiful smile, it also contributes greatly to the patient’s overall oral health. Physically damaged teeth can affect the health of the teeth surrounding them as well as bite and jaw function, and can easily be corrected through cosmetic dentistry.

Composite Bonding / Tooth Coloured Fillings

In the right situation, composite bonding can be an excellent way to correct cracked, chipped, or discoloured teeth and create a straighter, more uniform smile. Dr. Pegios can also replace silver amalgam fillings with a composite resin that matches your natural tooth colour. The process is relatively short and painless: Dr. Pegios will first roughen the tooth to promote adhesion, then apply the composite resin, reshape the tooth, harden the material with a high-intensity light, and perform a final polish. The result is a natural looking, impeccably shaped tooth that is protected from further cracking and decay. Composite bonding is one of the most affordable cosmetic options, and usually only requires one appointment with Dr. George Pegios at the Australian Institute of Implant Dentistry.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are a popular choice for patients with stained, chipped, or crooked teeth. After making a mould of the teeth you wish to correct, Dr. Pegios will create custom veneers made of light and durable porcelain. Because porcelain closely matches the tooth’s natural lustre, your new veneers will look and function just like the enamel on your original teeth. Although porcelain veneers are more costly than other cosmetic options, they are extremely long-lasting, and will help prevent many of the complications associated with thin or damaged tooth enamel, such as sensitivity, infection, and decay. The Australian Institute of Implant Dentistry highly recommends investing in porcelain veneers.

Teeth Whitening

Over time, teeth often become discoloured and stained. Sometimes yellowing is simply a result of aging, but coffee, tea, red wine, colas, and cigarettes can also play a part. Fortunately, these effects can be reversed using our in-office or at-home teeth whitening solutions. At the Australian Institute of Implant Dentistry, we use the patented BriteSmile® whitening system, which can make your smile brighter and more beautiful than ever before - in just an hour!

We will first apply a hydrogen peroxide-based whitening gel to the surface of the teeth and use BriteSmile®'s patented gentle blue light for twenty minutes to activate the solution. As the hydrogen peroxide is broken down, oxygen enters the enamel and dentin, lightening the stained portions of the teeth while keeping their structure intact. We will repeat the process twice more, and finally remove the gel to reveal a set of stain-free, luminous teeth. For patients concerned about pain during the procedure, BriteSmile® uses a lower percentage of hydrogen peroxide (15 percent) that ensures little to no discomfort.

Dr. Pegios personally tried BriteSmile® while researching the latest whitening systems, and this is what he had to say:

“Out of all the systems we trialled, BriteSmile® provided the best result in the shortest, most comfortable way. Compared to other systems there was very little sensitivity - I wanted this for my patients.”

For more information, please see the BriteSmile® website.

We also offer take-home whitening kits that allow you to whiten your teeth up to six shades over a period of one to two weeks. Simply wear the whitening trays while you sleep and watch your smile brighten daily!

Porcelain Crowns

Dental crowns are an effective solution for teeth that are badly damaged. A crown serves as a cover that protects the damaged tooth, improves its appearance, and prevents further decay, chipping, or cracking. Dr. Pegios will create a custom crown for each damaged tooth, matching it in size and shape to the surrounding teeth. This will not only improve the overall appearance of your smile, it can also save teeth that might otherwise be lost.

Porcelain crowns are the most realistic-looking option available. With the new zirconium based porcelain crowns you can have metal free crowns and bridges for all teeth.

Bridges

Fixed dental bridges are used to fill a gap created by one or more missing teeth. The bridge consists of two crowns, one on either side of the gap, with a prosthetic tooth in between. The bridge can be supported by existing teeth, dental implants, or a combination of the two. The process is similar to that of a simple crown; Dr. Pegios will create a mould of your existing teeth and fashion a realistic prosthetic tooth and crowns to create a full bridge. He will then securely cement the crowns to the existing teeth, creating a functional bite and natural look. Bridges usually last from five to seven years with good care and proper maintenance.
