Dr. George Pegios – Australian Institute of Implant Dentistry – Gum and Bone Regeneration Procedures

Here at the Australian Institute of Implant Dentistry, we are focusing on more conservative ways of treating dental disease. We have introduced several new procedures to help in regeneration of bone and gum that has been lost as a result of periodontal (gum) disease. In addition to conventional treatments involving scaling the teeth and gums with ultrasonic and hand instruments, our treatment plans include Ozone therapy and the use of medical grade lasers to disinfect the affected areas of the mouth, and the use of Emdogain in the regeneration of tissue lost to gum disease.

Ozone Therapy

The oxidizing effectiveness of ozone is well documented and it can be produced in a controlled manner. More importantly, ozone is extremely effective at reducing the amount of bacteria and viruses present in water and air. It can oxidize many organic compounds and is a powerful germicide. This is where its application in dentistry is unparalleled.

Ozone can be used to help treat periodontal disease by using ozone water flushes below the gum line and/or ozone gas infiltrated into the gum tissue and supporting tissues. Ozone promotes healing; the basis of healing is the destruction of viral and bacterial contamination and an increased oxygen mass at the site of application.

As the ozone is applied topically to the gums, it is a fast and painless procedure that is easily tolerated by all patients.Ozone therapy is indicated for all patients with evidence of periodontal disease. However, it is not suitable for use in pregnancy.

Laser Therapy

The use of medical grade lasers in the treatment of gum disease is widely scientifically established. It provides an alternative or an adjunct to the more invasive traditional surgical procedures. It is also useful for patients who may not be suitable for periodontal surgery. When lasers are used properly during periodontal therapy there can be less bleeding, swelling and discomfort to the patient during treatment.

The laser assists in elimination of the bacteria which cause the gum disease and helps to promote optimal healing of the mouth. This is an exciting and revolutionary treatment protocol on which studies have shown microscopically that we can form a new root coating (cementum) and new connective tissue attachment (collagen), thus regenerating the tissue lost to gum disease

The laser is used during the phase one, non-surgical therapy much like ultrasonic instruments.Once the primary therapy appointments are finished, the maintenance programme begins. The laser can be easily incorporated into these appointments to assist in the bacterial control and to maintain periodontal health.

Emdogain

Emdogain is an exciting new addition to our range of treatments. As an adjunctive therapy to traditional periodontal repair, it allows the regeneration of bone and gum in areas of recession and defect in a safe and predictable manner. The aim of regeneration is to reproduce and reconstruct a lost or injured part in such a way that the form and function of the lost or damaged tissues are fully restored.

Emdogain has been shown to improve the results of tissue regeneration treatments in over 100 scientific studies. Over a period of months, the tissues reassert themselves and a new functional attachment forms. The formation of these new attachments allows the patient to retain their natural teeth in a functionally and aesthetically acceptable manner.

As the studies indicate, the use of Emdogain leads to highly improved clinical results, excellent long term benefits and improved patient satisfaction.
