Dr. George Pegios – Australian Institute of Implant Dentistry – Dental Implants

Implant dentistry is one of the most time-tested of all modern dental procedures, and has been used for over 35 years as a permanent, highly effective solution to missing teeth. The replacement of missing teeth is important to a patient’s oral health and overall well-being. Not only do missing teeth affect chewing ability and cause crowding, chipping, or tilting of surrounding teeth, they can also make a person feel self-conscious and inhibited from partaking in day-to-day activities. Dentures can present a problem for many people, as they often become loose while talking or chewing and require adhesives. For long time denture wearers, dental implants are an attractive option.

Dr. George Pegios is renowned for his expertise in dental implants, and founded the Australian Institute of Implant Dentistry in 2001 to share his knowledge. He is regularly invited to lecture on the subject in Australia and overseas, and has appeared on the national television programme "Today Tonight" as an implant practitioner. Dr. Pegios was one of the first dentists in Australia to offer Novum 'Same Day Teeth', and was one of the first dentists in the world trained in Nobel Biocare’s Teeth-in-an-Hour™.

When you arrive at our office for an implants consultation, Dr. Pegios and the rest of the staff at the Australian Institute of Implant Dentistry will be happy to share with you their extensive knowledge of the field.

What Are Dental Implants?

Simply put, a dental implant serves as an artificial replacement for the root of a missing tooth. A post made of titanium alloy is fused with the jaw bone to act as an anchor for a replacement tooth or crown. Once the post has been fully fused and the permanent replacement tooth attached, the implant appears natural and fully integrated into the mouth. The process requires minor surgery, and will vary greatly in length and cost depending on how many teeth are being replaced. At the Australian Institute of Implant Dentistry, we will provide a thorough examination and cost estimate on your first visit.

Who is a Candidate for Implants?

Anyone who is missing one or more teeth due to injury, disease, or decay can benefit from dental implants. Implants are especially helpful to patients who can no longer wear dentures or who cannot chew or speak comfortably with dentures.

An ideal implant candidate will be in good general health, have healthy gums and substantial bone to anchor the implant into the jaw, and be committed to meticulous oral hygiene post-surgery. Dr. Pegios will carefully examine your teeth and medical history to determine if implants are right for you.

Single and Multiple Implants

Having one or more implants installed is a good option for patients who are missing individual teeth and do not want a fixed bridge or partial denture. Individual implants are by far the best solution when both the tooth and the root are missing or damaged. Dr. Pegios can replace a single missing tooth, several teeth, or an entire set. Implants can also be used in conjunction with bridges and partial dentures if the patient does not want to commit to a full set of implants.

'Same Day Teeth'

For patients with limited time availability, Dr. Pegios offers 'Same Day Teeth' using the Branemark Novum system. As seen on “Today Tonight,” Dr. Pegios is able to treat patients much more quickly by placing the implants in the morning and fitting a fixed, bone-anchored bridge in the afternoon. Using this revolutionary technology, Dr. Pegios enables patients to leave the Australian Institute of Implant Dentistry with a functional set of lower teeth in just a day.

Teeth-in-an-Hour™

Nobel Biocare’s Teeth-in-an-Hour™ allows patients to have their teeth replaced in a single 30 to 60 minute procedure. Using computer-assisted technology, Dr. Pegios and his team can design, manufacture, and implant a full set of teeth in a fraction of the time required for traditional implants.

The process takes from two visits to the Australian Institute of Implant Dentistry. During the first visit, Dr. Pegios will assess your current dentures and take a CT scan from which he will create a three-dimensional image of your mouth. This data is then used to develop a customised set of teeth that will be placed during your next visit. In the meantime, Dr. Pegios and his team compose a highly detailed itinerary that will allow the surgery to run quickly and smoothly.

When you come in for surgery, the posts will be attached to the jaw bone, and the prosthetic set of teeth will be attached to the posts. The concept is similar to traditional implants, except that the new teeth are implanted as a set rather than individually. This significantly reduces the amount of time that you must commit to treatment and recovery, and the results are immediate.

You will leave our office with a permanent, fully functional set of teeth. Because the surgery is minimally invasive, recovery time is quite short, and you will immediately notice the difference in your ability to chew, speak, and smile freely.
